They even brought babies for him to touch; but when the disciples saw this they scolded them for it. But Jesus called for the children and said, "let the little ones come to me; do not try to stop them; for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you that whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it." (Luke 18, verses 15 - 17)

Heute ist Nikolaustag. Der Tradition nach kommt der heilige Nikolaus und fragt nach, ob die Kinder das Jahr über auch brav gewesen seien. Die Kinder bekommen kleine Geschenke, zumeist Süßigkeiten, und werden angewiesen, in der Zeit bis zum Heiligen Abend noch besonders brav zu sein. Dann wird es nämlich das ganz große Geschenk geben.
Müssen wir auch brav sein, also etwas leisten, um etwas geschenkt zu bekommen?
Ich sage die Antwort gleich: Gott biete uns ein grandioses Geschenk an, gleichgültig was für gute oder schlechte Menschen wir sind oder waren. Aber Jesus möchte, daß wir einfältig und offen wie ein Kind zu ihm kommen.

Today is St. Nicolas day. In Germany it is tradition that St. Nicolas comes and asks whether the children had behaved nicely throughout the year. The children receive little presents, generally sweets, and they are told to keep on behaving nicely until Christmas Eve. Then they will get the big present.
Do we also have to behave nicely? Do we have to fulfil tasks in order to get a present?
I will tell you the answer right away: God offers us an enormous gift, no matter whether we have been good or evil characters. But Jesus wants us to approach him in a simple and open way just like a child.
