Escape to Egypt

Als sie zurückgekehrt waren, erschien der Engel des Herrn Joseph im Traum und sagte zu ihm: "Steh sofort auf! Nimm das Kind und seine Mutter und fliehe nach Ägypten. Bleibe dort, bis ich es dir sage. Herodes will nämlich das Kind suchen, um es umzubringen." Er stand noch in der Nacht auf, nahm das Kind und dessen Mutter und floh nach Ägypten. Er blieb dort bis zum Ende des Herodes. Damit wurde erfüllt, was der Herr durch den Propheten (Hosea 11,1) gesagt hatte: Aus Ägypten habe ich meinen Sohn gerufen.
Als Herodes merkte, daß die Sternforscher ihn hintergangen hatten, wurde er sehr wütend. Er schickte seine Leute nach Bethlehem und ließ dort im ganzen Umkreis alle Knaben bis zum Alter von zwei Jahren töten. Das war etwa die Zeitspanne, die er nach Aussagen der Sterndeuter berechnet hatte. Dadurch ging in Erfüllung, was der Prophet Jeremia gesagt hatte, nämlich: Eine Stimme des heftigen Weinens und Klagens wurde in Rama gehört. Rahel beweint ihre Kinder und will sich nicht trösten lassen, denn sie sind nicht mehr da.
Nachdem Herodes gestorben war, siehe, da erschien Joseph in Ägypten im Traum der Engel des Herrn und sagte: "Stehe sofort auf, nimm das Kind und die Mutter zu dir und ziehe in das Land Israel! Die nach dem Leben des Kindes getrachtet hatten, sind inzwischen gestorben." Er stand sofort auf, nahm das Kind und dessen Mutter zu sich und zog in das Land Israel.
Als er hörte, daß Herodes' Sohn Archelaus nun König in Judäa geworden war, fürchtete er sich, dorthin zu gehen. Auf Gottes Anweisung in einem Traum hin ging er in das Gebiet Galliläa und ließ sich in der Stadt Nazareth nieder. Dadurch wurde das Wort des Propheten erfüllt: Man wird ihn Nazarener nennen. (Matthäus 2, 13 - 23) 		After they had gone an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, and said to him, "rise up, take the child and his mother and escape with them to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the child to do away with him." So Joseph rose from sleep and taking mother and child by night he went away with them to Egypt, and there he stayed until Herod's death. This was to fulfil what the Lord had declared through the prophet: "I called my son out of Egypt."
When Herod saw how the astrologers had tricked him he fell into a passion, and gave order for the massacre of all children in Bethlehem and its neighbourhood, of the age of two years or less, corresponding with the time he had ascertained from the astrologers. So the words spoken through Jeremiah the prophet were fulfilled: "A voice was heard in Rama, wailing and loud laments; it was Rachel weeping for her children, and refusing all consolation, because they were no more."
The time came that Herod died; and an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt and said to him, "Rise up, take the child and his mother and go with them to the land of Israel, for the men who threatened the child's life are dead." So he rose, took mother and child with him, and came to the land of Israel. Hearing, however, that Archealaus had succeeded has father Herod as king of Judea, he was afraid to go there. And being warned by a dream, he withdrew to the region of Gallilee; there he settled in a town called Nazareth. This was to fulfil the words spoken through the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene." (Matthew 2, 13 - 23)
