Jesus lebte also bei seinen Eltern in Nazarath.
Benehmt euch erst mal so,
daß ihr des Umdenkens würdig seid. Haltet euch nicht zu Gute,
daß ihr schließlich Abraham als Vater habt. Ich sage euch
nämlich eins: Aus diesen Steinen hier kann Gott Kinder Abrahams
erschaffen.
was sollen wir tun?"
(Lukas
3, 1 - 22)
diesen Messias.

So Jesus lived with his parents in Nazareth. As it had
been custom in those days he learned his father's profession. He became
a carpenter. We have quite exact information on the time when the following
events had taken place, because all the various governors are mentioned,
which we also find in history books. Thus we know that Jesus had been
about thirty years old when this all had happened. John of whom we hear
quite a lot here, is exactly six months older than Jesus. In the first
chapter of the Gospel of Luke you can read about his birth.
In the fifteenth year of the Emperor
Tiberius, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea, when Herod was
prince of Galilee, his brother Philipp prince of Ituraea and Trachonitis,
and Lysanias prince of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas
and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.
And he went all over the Jordan valley proclaiming a baptism in token
of repentance for the forgiveness of sin, as it is written in the book
of the prophecies of Isaiah (Isaiah 40, 3-5):
A voice crying aloud in the wilderness, "Prepare a way for the Lord;
Clear a straight path for him. Every ravine shall be filled in, and
every mountain and hill levelled; The corners shall be straightened,
and the rough ways made smooth; and all mankind shall see God's deliverance."
Crowds of people came out to be baptized by him, and he said to them:
"You viper's brood! Who warned you to escape from the coming retribution?
Then prove your repentance by the fruit it bears; and do not begin saying
to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father:' I tell you that God
can make children for Abraham out of these stones here. Already the
axe is laid to the roots of the trees; and every tree that fails to
produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire."(*)
The people asked him, "Then what are we to do?" He replied, "The man
with two shirts must share with him who has none, and anyone who has
food must do the same." Among those who came to be baptized were tax
gatherers (**), and they said to him, "Master, what are we to do?" He
told them, "Exact no more than the assessment." Soldiers on service
also asked him, "And what of us?" To them he said, "No bullying; no
blackmail; make do with your pay!"
The people were on the tiptoe of expectation, all wondering about John,
whether perhaps he was the Messiah (***), but he spoke out and said
to them all. "I baptize you with water; but there is one to come whi
is mightier than I. I am not fit to unfasten his shoes. He will baptize
you with the Holy spirit and with fire. His shovel is ready in his hand,
to winnow his threshing floor and gather the wheat into his granary;
but he will burn the chaff on a fire that can never go out."
In this and many other ways he made his appeal to the people and announced
the good news. But Prince Herod, when he was rebuked by him over the
affair of his brother's wife Herodias and for other misdeeds, crowned
them all by shutting John up in prison.
During a general baptism of the people, when Jesus too had been baptized,
and was praying, heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him
in bodily form like a dove; and there came a voice from heaven, "Thou
art my Son, my Beloved; on thee my favour rests." (Luke
3, 1 - 22)
* In the stories about and from Jesus we often find
parables. In those days it had bee common custom to speak in parables.
This had been a way of making certain thought and ideas much better
understood. Within the following stories you will find a lot more of
these parables.
** Tax-gatherer: In those days it had more or less been custom that
the tax-gatherers gathered a lot more than what they had to send to
Rome. The more that the collected they used for their personal welfare.
The people knew about this but nothing could be done against it. So
it is quite understandable that nobody liked tax-gatherers.
*** Messiah: In the Old Testament, the Holy Book of the Jews there is
quite a lot written about a Saviour that is to be expected and that
will come free the people Israel some day. The Jewish people desperately
waited (and is still waiting) for this Messiah.
