Der zwölfjährige Jesus im Tempel

Twelve-year-old Jesus in the Temple

Es gibt nur einen einzigen konkreten Bericht über eine Begebenheit aus der Kindheit von Jesus. Er war damals 12 Jahre alt, also schon fast an der Schwelle zum Jugendliche. Das passierte:

Und seine Eltern reisten jährlich am Passahfest nach Jerusalem. Und als er (Jesus) zwölf Jahre alt war, gingen sie nach der Gewohnheit des Festes hinauf. Und als sie die Tage vollendet hatten und wieder heimkehrten, blieb der Knabe Jesus in Jerusalem; und seine Eltern wußten es nicht. Da sie aber meinten, er wäre unter den Gefährten, zogen sie eine Tagereise weit und suchten ihn unter den Verwandten und Bekannten. Und da sie ihn nicht fanden, kehrten sie wieder nach Jerusalem zurück und suchten ihn. Und es begab sich, nach drei Tagen fanden sie ihn im Tempel sitzend mitten unter den Lehrern, wie er ihnen zuhörte und sie fragte. Es erstaunten aber alle, die ihn hörten, über seinen Verstand und seine Antworten. Und als sie ihn sahen, entsetzten sie sich; und seine Mutter sprach zu ihm: „Kind, warum hast du uns das getan? Siehe, dein Vater und ich haben dich mit Schmerzen gesucht.“ Und er sprach zu ihnen: „Was habt ihr mich gesucht? Wußtet ihr nicht, daß ich sein muß in dem, was meines Vaters ist?“ Und sie verstanden das Wort nicht, das er zu ihnen sagte. Und er ging mit ihnen hinab und kam gen Nazareth und war ihnen untertan. Und seine Mutter behielt alle diese Worte in ihrem Herzen. Und Jesus nahm zu an Weisheit, Alter und Gnade bei Gott und den Menschen. (Lukas 2, 41 – 52)

Hat der Knabe, Jesus, hier doch etwas angestellt? War er seinen Eltern ungehorsam? Lies den Text genau. Jesus hat nichts angestellt. Es gab lediglich ein Mißverständnis zwischen seinen Eltern und ihm. Seine Eltern meinten, Jesus sei in der Gruppe der Heimreisenden. Jesus selbst aber fand es völlig natürlich und richtig, daß er im Tempel blieb. Wieso? Ich kann mir nicht vorstellen, daß Maria oder Joseph zu ihrem Kind irgendwann gesagt haben, „Hör zu, du bist nicht durch natürliche Zeugung entstanden sondern durch den heiligen Geist.“ Hätte ein normales Kind im Alter von 12 Jahren so etwas verstanden? Wohl kaum.

Jesus war gegenüber Joseph stets gehorsam, wie es sich für ein Kind gehört. Auch das steht hier im Text. Zugleich jedoch wußte er, daß in Wirklichkeit nicht Joseph sondern Gott selbst sein Vater ist. Als er dann im Alter von 12 Jahren zum ersten Mal den Tempel in Jerusalem betrat, spürte er, hier ist Gott, sein Vater, anwesend.

Gemäß dem jüdischen Glauben war Gott stets im Tempel anwesend. Heute wissen wir, daß Gott im Herzen eines jeden Menschen sein kann, der an ihn glaubt. Doch auch bei Christen gibt es Momente, in denen sie die Gegenwart Gottes besonders spüren. Dies mag sein, wenn zwei, drei oder mehr Christen miteinander beten. Manche Menschen spüren auch die Gegenwart Gottes besonders, wenn sie eine Kirche betreten.

Für Jesus war es also nicht nur ganz selbstverständlich, daß er im Tempel blieb, es war sogar eine große Freude für ihn, endlich einmal im Haus seines richtigen Vaters zu sein. Maria und Joseph hingegen verstehen es nicht, als Jesus das zu ihnen sagt. Obwohl beide Eltern sehr wohl um die besonderen Umstände der Geburt dieses Kindes wissen, verstehen zu diesem Zeitpunkt noch immer nicht, daß er der Sohn Gottes ist.

Jesus respektiert das und geht sofort gehorsam mit seinen irdischen Eltern mit zurück nach Nazareth. Obgleich er wahrscheinlich bereits im Alter von 12 Jahren intellektuell Maria und Joseph weit überlegen war, kommt von ihm kein typisch jugendliches „Ja, aber...“ Jesus achtet die Autorität seiner Eltern und weiß zugleich, daß all deren Handeln aus Liebe zu ihm geschieht.

Verstehst Du es, daß Jesus der Sohn Gottes ist? Verstehst Du, was es bedeutet, daß er ausgerechnet Dich liebt?

Now it was the practice of his parents to go to Jerusalem every year for the Passover festival; and when he was twelve, they made the pilgrimage as usual. When the festival season was over and they started for home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know this; but thinking that he was with the party they journeyed for a whole day, and only then did they begin looking for him among their friends and relations. As they could not find him the returned to Jerusalem to look for him; and after three days they found him sitting in the temple surrounded by the teachers, listening to them and putting questions; and all who heard him were amazed at his intelligence and the answers he gave. His parents were astonished to see him there, and his mother said to him, “My son why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.” “What made you search,” her said, “Did you not know that I was bound to be in my Father's house?” But they did not understand what he meant. Then he went back with them to Nazareth, and continued to be under their authority; his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. As Jesus grew up he advanced in wisdom and favour with God and men. (Luke 2, 41 – 52)

Did the child Jesus behave incorrectly here? Did he not obey his parents? Read the text carefully. Jesus did nothing wrong. There had just been a misunderstanding between him and his parents. His parents thought that he would be with the group of pilgrims travelling home. Jesus himself, however, considered it fully normal and correct that he stayed in the temple. Why? I cannot imagine that Mary and Joseph some day took the child Jesus aside and explained him: “Listen you did not come to exist through the natural process of conceiving but through the Holy Spirit.” Would a normal child at the age of 12 have understood this? I very much doubt it.

Jesus always obeyed Joseph the way it was expected for a child to behave. This, too, we read in this text. At the same time, however, he knew that not Joseph but God himself is his father. When at the age of twelve then for the first time he set his foot into the temple, he felt that here God, his father, is present.

According to Jewish belief God always is present in the temple. Today we know that God can be in the heart of every person who believes in him. Yet for Christians, too, there are moments where they feel the presence of Good with special intensity. This may happen when two, three or more Christians pray together. Some people also feel a special presence of God when they enter a church building.

Thus for Jesus it was not only completely natural that he stayed in the temple, it furthermore gave him special joy finally to be in the house of his real Father. Mary and Joseph on the contrary don't understand it when Jesus says this to them. Although both parents know very well all the special details of the birth of Jesus, at this point they still don't recognise that he is the Son of God.

Jesus respects this, and immediately obeys and accompanies his earthly parents back to Nazareth. Although at his young age of twelve he obviously intellectually already stood high above Mary and Joseph, he does not argue with his parents in the typical way of young ones, “Yes, but.....” Jesus respects his parents' authority, and at the same time he knows that all their acting derived from their love to him.

Do you understand it that Jesus is the Son of God? Do you understand what it means that He precisely loves you?
